How to Paint a Scalloped Wall
An easy step by step tutorial on how to paint a scalloped wall. It adds so much character and charm to any space, especially in a kids room.
There’s nothing I love more than decorating a kids space. Especially since I love to keep the rest of our home neutral, I enjoy getting to play with more color in their rooms.
I knew when I started my daughters bedroom makeover that I wanted to add a scalloped wall. So now is the perfect time to show you all how to paint a scalloped wall, the easiest way.
The wall that her bed is featured on already has shiplap installed and vintage floral wallpaper. With a lot going on there, the rest of the room looked bare and boring. Adding a scalloped wall gave it so much more interest, and it turned out so so beautiful too.
Supplies Needed to Paint a Scalloped Wall
- Piece of paper, cardstock, cardboard (etc) for scallop stencil
- Bowl, round object to trace – the size of scallop you are looking for
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Level
- Paint – I used BEHR Vintage Pewter
- Small paint brush and paint roller or paint brush
Instructions for Painting a Scalloped Wall
- I started by finding a bowl the size of the scallop I wanted, and traced around it on a piece of card stock (just a thicker paper to use).
- Then I cut out the circle with scissors.
3. Next, I folded the circle in half, and cut along the crease to cut the circle in half. This will be your stencil for the scallops.
4. Using a 24″ level, I drew a horizontal line 49 inchs up from the baseboards on all the walls I was going to stencil.
5. Next, I took my paper scallop stencil and just set it on top of the line, and with a pencil traced it over and over. Since the paper is bendable I just folded it around any corners or edges so I didn’t have to break the pattern.
6. I painted the tops of the scallops with a smaller detailed brush, and filled in the rest with a paint roller and regular paint brush.
Easy as that. No need to buy an expensive stencil, or print anything out. Just create your own, and customize these instructions to however you want your room to look.
Why Add a Painted Scalloped Wall to Space?
- To create visual interest
- To add a bold color without overwhelming the space
- To make a room feel more whimsical for a girl, or more bubbly for a boy
- To create a sort of wall treatment that doesn’t require attaching wood or other materials
- To break up boredom on the walls
I feel like I am about 95% done with this girls room makeover. I have all the big things completed, but I’m still just collecting a few more little decor pieces.
So far she is pretty happy with her new space. She walks in (when it’s clean) and says, “awe it’s so pretty.” I mean, that’s all that matters. Mission accomplished.
Stay tuned soon for the final big reveal!
