How to Create a Colorful Country-Inspired Bedroom for a Girl

It feels so good to be back in this little corner of the internet! It’s been way too long since I’ve shared a new project here on Little Glass Jar. And I cannot even begin to tell you how much I’ve missed this space and being creative.

So what better way to jump back in than with a room I’ve been meaning to properly share for a while now—my daughter Emma’s bedroom.

Emma is every bit of a second child. She’s wild, fearless, and bold. And she’ll have you absolutely wrapped around her finger as soon as you hear her cute little voice and mispronunciations that I refuse to correct.

I knew that her room had to reflect all the best parts of her. It’s colorful, cozy, and a little bit country, with a mix of vintage-inspired details, fun patterns, natural wood, and plenty of personality. It’s one of my favorite rooms in our home, and today I’m finally giving you the full tour and sharing some of the ideas that helped bring the room together.

If you’re decorating a girl’s bedroom and want something colorful and collected rather than overly matchy or neutral, I hope this room gives you some ideas!

Start With a Color Palette You Love

One of my favorite things about Emma’s room is the color. And since I’m usually a neutrals girl, this room was such fun project to step outside my normal palette and go a little crazy in.

I didn’t want the room to feel like everything had to match perfectly. Instead, I wanted to mix soft pinks with muted greens, warm wood tones, creamy whites, and little pops of color throughout the room.

The result is colorful without feeling chaotic.

A few things that helped:

• I repeated the same colors throughout different parts of the room.
• I used plenty of white to give the eye somewhere to rest.
• I incorporated natural wood and wicker to add warmth.
• I let the bedding, artwork, and accessories bring in some of the more playful colors.

You don’t have to choose just one or two colors for a colorful bedroom. The trick is to repeat colors in different ways so the room still feels cohesive.

Mix Patterns for a Cozy Country Feel

One of the easiest ways to bring a country-inspired feeling into a bedroom is through pattern. For this room I mixed gingham, florals, quilts, and other small-scale patterns layered throughout the space.

The key is that not every pattern has to match. I think a room feels much more interesting when the patterns aren’t perfectly coordinated.

For this room I kept many of the patterns in a similar soft, muted color palette. That makes it easier to mix gingham with florals and other prints without everything competing for attention.

If you’re nervous about mixing patterns, start with one pattern you really love and pull a few of its colors into the rest of the room.

Use the Walls to Add Personality

One of the biggest design moments in Emma’s room is the gingham wallpaper. Rather than wallpapering every wall, I paired the patterned wallpaper with white wainscoting below it.

I love this combination because the wallpaper brings in pattern and personality, while the white lower half keeps the room from feeling too busy.

Wallpaper and simple wall molding is also a great way to create a focal point without needing a ton of artwork.

Then I layered artwork and decor over the wallpaper to make the space feel even more personal. The “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” quilt artwork is my favorite in this space.

I added more color to the other three walls by just painting it pink, from where the wainscoting started and below.

The way I typically choose colors is by pulling inspiration from something I already have my mind set on for the space. In this room it was the rug. I originally wanted to pull the little bits of olive green from the rug for the walls, but Emma was set on pink. So we went with Vintage Charm by BEHR.

Most of the artwork you’ll find in our home is from Etsy. I always grab picture frames when I find good deals on them, then I just buy and download printables from Etsy, and get them printed at Walgreens or CVS.

Another thing I love to do in both my girls rooms is string garland or banners to add that extra touch of whimsy. I love these white bunting garlands I hung from her ceiling along the main wall. It’s just a fun touch and adds so much character.

Mix Pretty Decor With Storage

Kids’ rooms need storage. It’s just a fact. But storage doesn’t have to look like storage.

I used baskets, little wooden painted crates, and open shelving to keep some of her things organized while still contributing to the overall design of the room. Baskets are always a go-to because they can hide the less-pretty things while adding texture to the space.

I’m a fan of using a combination of open and closed storage. Open shelves are great for books and things you want to display, while drawers and baskets are perfect for everything you don’t necessarily want to see.

Add Character With Vintage-Inspired Pieces

I’ll always be a lover of mixing old and new. You will find vintage pieces in every single room in our home. It’s such a great way to add history and character.

Emma’s wooden Jenny Lind spindle bed is one of my favorite pieces in the room. And a cheap yard sale find at that! The warm wood adds so much character against the lighter walls and bedding.

I also mixed in wicker baskets, a rattan bunny mirror, wooden shelves, vintage-inspired artwork, and little collected pieces. These details are what give the room that country-inspired, collected feeling.

You don’t need to fill a room with antiques to get this look. Even adding a few pieces that have a little age, texture, or character can make a newer room feel much more collected.

Don’t Forget the Little Details

Honestly, some of my favorite parts of this room are the little details.

The old fair ribbons I picked up at an antique mall were the inspiration for this room. The colors of the rug inspired the colors in the room.

The canopy tent with the cushion is her favorite hiding spot, especially when she wants to paint her nails red without asking. Thank goodness for Folex…

Her little reading nook is another favorite. The oversized pink floor chair gives her a cozy place to curl up with a book (or hide her sisters Barbie accessories under), while the book ledges make it easy for her to see and grab her favorites.

You have to be able to mix pretty with practical in kid rooms. If something can look cute and serve a purpose, even better.

Make the Room Feel Like Your Child

I think this is probably the most important part.

A girl’s bedroom doesn’t have to look perfectly styled. Let’s be honest, these pictures are what her room is going to look like 1% of the time. But it was important to me that this room felt like her.

A little imperfection is what makes a room feel lived in.

And as much as I love a beautifully decorated room, I want my kids to actually feel comfortable in their rooms. They should be able to read, play, collect things, and make a mess without feeling like they’re going to ruin the decor.

As much as my OCD wants to keep it clean all the time, I’ve learned that is absolutely impossible.
