Sometimes the simplest projects turn out to be my favorite ones, and this happens to be one of those projects! Chalkboards will never go out of style for me, and the strangest part is that I rarely write on them! It’s true! I’m sure if I would teach myself how to successfully attempt some chalkboard art, then maybe I would. But, I love the look of a seasoned, dusty chalkboard just as much as a pretty framed wall hanging. I think they add character and charm to a space, and give it a rustic touch, and we all know how much I love that! I wanted to make one for my office, and knew I had the perfect spot for it

There is a wall in my office that has been driving me absolutely crazy, and I have changed it a million times. Raise your hand if you can relate! You have seen it before, here here and here. It isn’t that I hated how these options looked, they just didn’t flow with the wall space. It is the first wall of the office that you see when you walk down our hallway, so I want it to be perfect. This chalkboard filled the space well, and is eye catching enough to make someone passing by want to come pop in. Will it stay this way before my office reveal?! Who knows! For now I am loving my new DIY Office Chalkboard!

First, I used our miter saw to cut the 1×2 furring strips into 2 ft each with  45 degree angles to make the frame for the chalkboard. I use these strips for DIY frames a lot because they give such a nice thin, rustic edge that isn’t too bulky or heavy for such a light piece of wood, such as this plywood I used.

Next I used an old rag to stain the frame with a dark wood stain, and used a sponge paint roller to paint the 2x2ft of plywood with chalkboard paint. I applied 4-5 coats of the chalkboard paint to make sure it was evenly distributed.

Once the stain and chalkboard paint was dry, I used a drill and four corner brackets to secure the frame to the plywood.  Then I added two saw tooth picture hangers and it was ready to hang in the office!

For a good dusty look, I just took a piece of chalk and rubbed it all over the chalkboard then wiped it off with a piece of cloth, typically called “seasoning” the chalkboard. This leaves such a great look if you don’t want to write on it and leave it as is. Like I said, I love just leaving the board like this! What do you think!?
